Michael Smeets

Michael Smeets is a native of Larchmont, New York. He is currently a senior analyst at Fir Tree Partners, a multi-strategy hedge fund based in New York. At Columbia Michael was president of the investment idea club, which hosts monthly meetings where students can pitch stock ideas to a panel of experienced portfolio managers. Prior to attending Columbia, Michael was an analyst operating in a generalist role at Royal Capital, a $1.5 Billion long-short equity hedge fund based in mid-town Manhattan. He also spent two years at Sankaty Advisors, the credit hedge fund of Bain Capital, covering Metals and Mining. Michael graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 2005, receiving dual degrees in Electrical Engineering and Finance & Management through the Jerome Fischer program in Management and Technology. Michael enjoys sailing, surfing, skiing, and adventure travel.
